Background

The Dash 8-40C is six axle diesel-electric locomotive built by GE Transportation Systems between 1987 and 1992, of which 581 were built.

75 of these units were ordered by Norfolk Southern, and an additional 14 were inherited after merging with Conrail. The Dash 8-40C was the first model of any locomotive series to be fitted with microprocessor-equipped control units.

They were built with a traditional narrow short hood, but would later be produced with wide nose “safety” cabs for increased safety and comfort as the Dash 8-40CW.
