The most numerous of the Siemens Desiro family, the South West Trains Class 450 consists of a fleet of 127 4-car sets. These are formed of two Driving Motor Standard Opens, each seating 70 passengers in 2+2 and 2+3 style. One of the two intermediate vehicles is a Trailer Composite Open, seating 24 first and 32 stadnard class passengers. The first class section is located between the external doors found at 1/3 and 2/3 positions. This vehicle also features a standard toilet. The second of the intermediate vehicles is a Trailer Standard Open, seating 61 passengers with 9 additional tip up seats around a disabled toilet and wheel chair area.

The Class 450 Desiro hit the headlines in 2001 when, only days after the UK Government awarded a 20 year franchise to operate the south western railway network, Stagecoach themselves announced they had signed a 1bn pound deal with Siemens for 785 vehicles to replace the aging BR Mk1 rolling stock that was presently operating the line.
