The SD70M features a wide or 'comfort cab' as compared to the original SD70s in service. This style of cab comes in two forms - Phase I has the two-piece windscreen with additional downward viewing from the corners, while Phase II is similar to the SD60M which features three-piece windscreen and no raking from bottom to top.

The SD70M is one of the most popular models of the SD70 produced. Purchasers include Burlington Northern (now BNSF Railway), Conrail (engines now owned by CSX Transportation), CSX, TFM/Kansas City Southern Railway and the Alaska Railroad.
