This is a scenario for the ATS West Coast Mainline – Midlands & Northwest “Missing Link” route.
You’re rostered on an unusual turn today, stepping in over 30 minutes early at Crewe Basford Hall to relieve the depot driver and take charge of a heavily loaded Freightliner intermodal bound for Coatbridge. Your duty is to work the train as far as Preston, and with it being early morning you should enjoy a relatively clear run on the West Coast Main Line, although that can quickly change as you edge closer to the morning rush hour. Normally this working would be entrusted to a pair of Class 86s, but with them unavailable, you’ve been allocated Class 66/5 No. 66540 “Ruby”, so expect a different driving experience with a single loco on the head end. Manage your power carefully, stay alert for pathing checks, and deliver your train smoothly to Preston ready for the onward crew.
