During 1993/1994, Strathclyde Passenger Transport Executive (SPTE) placed an order with Hunslet Transport Projects Limited (HPTL) for 21 Diesel Multiple Units, to replace their class 101 sets, based on the class 323 design. In the event, BR privatisation and issues within HTPL forced SPTE to cancel their order, but "What If..." they'd decided to go to BREL/Adtranz instead..? This version of the class 157 would have been restricted to 75mph and carry no Air Conditioning; thusly, matching the fleet they were designed to replace!
Note that this can also be used as a substitute class 156; until one is released to the franchise.
