The NS DD-AR's full name was Dubbeldeksaggloregiomaterieel , meaning 'Double Decker' 'Agglo(meration) Regio'. Agglo Regio was a brand name originally planned for Short Distance Commuter Service and Regional Distance Service, which the name never used expect on the stock themselves.
DD-ARs originally planned as EMU without need of locomotive, yet the development was delayed result as DD-AR rely on locomotive during 1991-1996, by then the motor car was introduced.
