InterCity XPT

InterCity XPT Train Sets were built by Comeng in Granville from 1981 for the New South Wales State Rail Authority, and entered passenger service in April 1982. The XPT is based on InterCity 125 High Speed Trains that were used in Great Britain.

Initially, 10 Power Cars and 20 Trailer Cars were built to make four 2+5 train sets and were operated on the Sydney to Dubbo, Sydney to Kempsey and Sydney to Albury services.

Following its success, InterCity XPT services were later extended to Canberra and North Tablelands, so an additional 5 Power Cars and 15 Trailer Cars were built in 1984. This was followed by another 12 Trailer Cars in 1986 to allow six train sets to be formed as 2+7.

In 1989, Countrylink was formed, and the XPT Train Sets were repainted in Countrylink livery from January 1990, with the last XPT to be painted from the original 'InterCity XPT' livery in July 1992.

In preparation for services to Melbourne in 1993, additional 4 Power Cars, 5 Deluxe Trailer Cars and 8 Sleeping Cars were built in 1992-3 by ABB Transportation of Dandenong, while existing vehicles were refurbished by A. Goninan & Co. of Newcastle, with work completed in February 1994.

The XPT Train Sets were refurbished in 2005-8 and were repainted in revised Countrylink livery. Today, the XPT Train Sets are operated by NSW TrainLink, and are due for replacement in 2023.
