In 1992, Metro North purchased 31 new P32AC-DM locomotives to replace the aging fleet of FL9s inherited from Conrail. As part of the financing for the new fleet, the Connecticut Department of Transportation purchased four of these locomotives outright for direct rush-hour trains from Danbury to Grand Central. In keeping with CDOT's Shore Line East locomotives, these new P32AC-DMs were painted into a version of the New Haven Railroad's famous "McGinnis" scheme, first introduced by NYNH&H president Pat McGinnis in 1955 and designed by Herbert Matter. After just shy of twenty years of service across the Metro North network, Metro North and CDOT had their entire P32AC-DM fleet refurbished at GE's plant in Erie, PA. Although the Metro North locomotives recieved a newly designed paint scheme, the CDOT fleet returned in the same ones they had always worn, albeit with a number of differences to lettering.
